Introductions have always been my weak point. That whole easing-into-it thing just isn’t really my style. I often tell people that I have only two levels of subtlety: so subtle no one notices and hitting someone over the head with a 2x4. People who don’t know me well used to suggest a career in diplomacy due to my language skills… Somehow, it just didn’t seem meant to be.
This whole blog thing arose from the promptings of a friend and when I say promptings, I mean nagging. I’ve yet to meet another person who can nag as successfully over the internet. Even my mother can’t surpass this woman. My mother usually resorts to threatening anything I’ve left at their house unless I do something (call me tomorrow or the teddy bear gets it!). I don’t think that qualifies as nagging, however. I doubt I would have given in and set up the blog if I hadn’t received a “sign” from the universe that I should. When four people in the course of one week suggest writing, it might mean something. My faith in this sign is a little diminished by the fact that two of them went on to say that I’d be a good writer because I have a “large vocabulary”. Yes, and this is why SAT study books hit the NY Times bestsellers list all the time.
As an unemployed post-graduate student, I find myself with ample free time and not enough to fill it with. After all, you can only get so many resume rejections in a week before the suicidal urges start to reach critical levels. I suppose blogging will give me something to do other than play video games and raise my blood pressure reading the comments on online news stories. Besides, I miss having some structure in my life. Maybe a deadline could be a good thing. So I’m committing myself to updating on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I give myself a week before the novelty pales, but if I’m going to do this horribly trendy blogging thing, I want to do it with style. Even if no one ever reads it but me and my lovely, nagging friend.
